An ingenious combination of both an A to Z and city guides for the whole of Britain, the package is designed to give not only special locations-hotels and so on-but also to guide you on the best way to get to them. Route 66 Britain 2000 is incredibly detailed. It comes with 1,000,000 streets in Britain marked, and suggested route maps. It also allows you to enter keywords for a specific town ("theatre" or "hotel", for instance), and will then show these locations on the map. If travelling between towns or streets, you key in your style of travelling-speed against scenery or economy-and the routemaster suggests an itinerary for you. The software then allows you to print out whichever element of the journey you wish, so that you can have a map of the key points to hand. This is certainly a very useful CD-ROM for anyone who spends a lot of time in different towns and cities in Britain. The graphics are clear and the suggested route-markings easy to follow. Review 3D World Atlas & Journey Planner GB "2 For 1" Pack / Softkey:Softkey's two-for-one range gives you two multimedia products on the same CD. In this case both have a mapping component, though they take radically different approaches to their subjects. Journey Planner Great Britainis a route planner that is fast and efficient. It has few frills, but can find the fastest, shortest and least expensive routes for any journey, with the latter using information you enter about fuel costs as well as its own data on road tolls. You can enter your preferred travel speeds on six types of road, and can even suggest the speed you travel when cycling. The software uses this to work out journey times, though note that it may send a cyclist along motorways, which is illegal. 3D World Atlas includes statistical information on the world's countries and you can use it to locate these along with mountains, rivers, volcanoes and other features. There is also information on a range of other global phenomena from tectonic plates to wind patterns, temperature to habitat loss. Narrated videos and animation talk you through the issues. There are some nifty satellite photos, and data on what the earth looks like at night from space.
