Review TaxCalc 2001 / Which Ltd:TaxCalc 2001 leads you through each section of the self-assessment form and points out any errors you have made. making it far preferable to hacking through the Inland Revenue's 29-page guide and getting yourself a well-filled pen. After all, "Self-assessment" time basically means that the Inland Revenue wants information. and lots of it. Which? Software claims TaxCalc will save "time, trouble and money". The first two are unarguable. [+]The opening screen lets you quickly create a new tax form, amend an existing one or go straight to Help. Once started, you'll find TaxCalc has broken the indigestible tax return into bite-size chunks-allowances, reliefs, Capital Gains Tax and so on. As you enter your data, the program is calculating your liability and whether you're in line for a refund. TaxCalc does rely on you being organised and having your paperwork and figures to hand but that is pretty straightforward for PAYE taxpayers and those with more complex affairs are given a helping hand with checklists of the various forms, figures and documents. There are tips on working the whole thing out, a glossary to slice through jargon and simple-to-read help pages that should quickly unplug any mental blocks. Once completed, you can file your return online. So it's simple to use but can it save you money? With advice on refunds it should stop you paying more tax. Almost as important, it's so quick and simple compared to the paper version that you're less likely to put off filling out the form and thus incurring a charge for late submission. -John Rennie.

And the Consumers' Association's TaxCalc 2002 doesn't disappoint. Back in its umpteenth edition, this should keep you out of trouble with the taxman. Which? proclaims that TaxCalc 2002 is "all you'll ever need" to deal with your tax affairs. And, unless you're a Member of Parliament (who are subject to slightly different rules on income tax) we think they are spot on. Employment, self-employment, partnership, share schemes, land and property, foreign income, trust and estate income, capital gains and the rest are dealt with in assiduous detail. Better still, the whole process is just so simple. The program is now in its 20th edition, and the process has got pretty refined over the years. It quizzes you for all the information it needs to complete you and your family's tax returns, making it near impossible to forget or leave anything out. You simply type in the answers to the questions. [+]It then calculates the tax you need to pay and tells you if you're in for a refund. It offers more than 40 tax-saving tips. Review Tax Self Assessment 2000 / Softkey:As if it weren't bad enough paying taxes, these days the Inland Revenue wants you to do the donkey work of calculating how much tax you owe. But rather than adding insult to injury, a slick piece of software like Self Assessment 2000 can actually turn the situation to your advantage. The package claims that you can "self-assess with less stress", and this certainly beats ploughing through the 30-odd pages of the Tax Return form with ballpoint and furrowed brow. The important thing with tax software is knowing that it's tried and tested and nothing is missing. This package is in its fifth year. As well as completing your return correctly, it aims to save you money, noting that an estimated 40 per cent of UK tax returns are actually completed inaccurately, and that most of us don't properly know our way around our personal allowances. An interview mode lets you get your data in quickly and accurately, and the program generates a print-off form you can post to the Revenue. The interface itself is quite easy to get to grips with, although stylistically just a little bit boring. It is clean and uncluttered however, and because of this it moves quickly from screen to screen. The search is very good, and offers the functionality surfers are used to on the best search engines, such as word substitutions in case of misspelling, and lists of similar entries, as well as loads of links to editorially screened non-Microsoft quality content sites, on specific topics.
