Review Works Suite 2003 DVD (Word, Money, AutoRoute, Encarta, Picture It, Works) / Microsoft:Microsoft Works Suite 2003 is a set of five CDs which comprises Works 7. 0 with its integrated word processor, spreadsheet, database and calendar and adds full copies of Word 2002, Encarta Standard Edition 2003, Money 2003, Picture It Photo and AutoRoute 2002. Given the individual retail cost of these extra products, it represents excellent value for money. The Works 7. 0 core is very task-based. For example, if you choose to "Manage a club" you'll end up using the spreadsheet to track finances, the database for membership records, Word to design the newsletter and Picture It to handle your club photos. By organising its interface around things to do rather than old-style menus of programs, Works encourages novices to explore its wide range of features; once you know what you're doing, you can use the programs menu to jump straight to the applications themselves. The extras (even the year-old AutoRoute) are really worth having. Word is the most widely used word processor in the world and it never hurts to have a copy on your home PC, while Picture It Photo has a decent selection of mainstream photo projects (calendars, address cards, flyers, kids ID cards and so on) to go with its easy-to-use editing features for removing red eye, adding picture frames and text to photos, cropping and framing photos or preparing them for use on the Web. Elsewhere, Money 2003 remains the friendliest of home finance programs with good investment tracking and an excellent, customisable front summary page. [+]AutoRoute 2002 still sets the pace for getting from A to B in Europe. The standard version of Encarta 2003 is a good study aid for juniors upwards; it's updatable via the Web and incorporates more than 30,000 articles and images along with videos, animations and audio. Microsoft Works Suite 2003 is simple enough to allow beginners to accomplish a wide range of home computing tasks. Review Communicate! / 01 Communique:This communication software package aims to let users manage phone, fax and e-mail messages in one place. It is strongest on phone and fax communication, and includes the features of an office phone system, such as speed dials, unlimited voicemail boxes and fax forwarding to remote locations. It can answer your incoming calls on the computer, distinguish voice calls from faxes, and allow you to provide customised voice menu services for your callers. You can also set up a fax back service whereby callers request archived faxes using voice-driven menus. Basic support is provided for sending and receiving e-mails, but not including automatic message filtering, searching or message storage in multiple folders. For major use of e-mail, users will still need to turn to specialist mail programs such as Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Outlook. Communicate's phone book database will hold multiple phone numbers, fax numbers, postal addresses and other information for each contact. Custom fields can be added, and searches carried out on any field. The data is stored in the common DBF format for ease of import and export. The visual design of this budget package can be somewhat inconsistent and confusing. [+]The main screen represents a telephone answering machine, and all functionality is reached through this interface-a quirky approach that might be intuitive for those unfamiliar with the usual conventions of Windows packages. -Frank Pennycook.

Review Office XP Professional Special Edition Upgrade & FREE FrontPage, Publisher & IntelliMouse / Microsoft:After the most painless installation yet from a Microsoft product, Office XP Professional immediately starts to make an impression. The code has obviously been tightened with programs starting and closing noticeably faster. As well as several key changes from Office 2000 to improve productivity and collaboration, many smaller welcome tweaks have been introduced to improve functionality across the board. The focus in this release is on making Office smarter, providing better collaboration tools and self-customising to individual users (with a bit of help). The "Smart Tags" are a clever way of automatically matching data in documents to tasks such as inserting an address when you're writing a letter in Word or copying and pasting data in Excel. This is extremely welcome as is the ability to customise auto-correct (don't correct these types of errors but do correct these). Also new are "Task panes". Imagine a cross between a Wizard and the Help section which, by means of some drop-down menus makes relevant commands easily available, thus achieving results faster. As well as the cross-product improvements, each suite has had an overhaul. Outlook has seen many tweaks that improve usability and productivity notably auto-correct during typing and improved ease of setting up mail accounts plus support for Hotmail. [+]PowerPoint contains a plethora of enjoyable new effects that can be combined in multiple ways leading to the most swish presentations and some useful new applications most notably the organisation chart creator. Word and Excel benefit the most from "Smart Tags" and "Task Panes". Some new useful features include a merge function in Word for incorporating other users' changes, a "Word Count" display for those late-night essays, a drop-down menu in Excel with commonly used functions and an extremely easy-to-use set of diagram creators. Office XP will improve productivity and results across the entire application suite. The improved functionality especially with "Smart Tags" and "Task Panes" once learnt will save users considerable time in creating quality documents. -Colin Neal.

Review Access 2002 Version Upgrade / Microsoft:If you use a PC, you almost certainly use the Office "productivity suite". Access 2002 is the database package in Microsoft's new version-Office xp. Xp includes all the familiar applications-Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook and FrontPage as well as Access. New features across the range, such as Task Panes, Smart Tags and integrated e-mail, aim to make the various applications more tightly integrated than ever as a package and squeeze that much more functionality out of each of the programs. Review Office XP Developer / Microsoft:A strong feature of Microsoft's Office XP is the way it can be customised and extended. All the main applications in the Office suite, such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, support VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), a full-featured programming language. The key to programming Office is in the object model presented by each application. Using this you can do things such as opening, editing and closing documents in Word, or reading and writing data from Excel spreadsheets under program control. Much of this comes as standard with Office, but the Developer Edition supplies a full version of Office XP Professional along with extra tools and documentation for developers. Its best value feature is the Access runtime, which lets you distribute Access database applications royalty-free. You also get developer versions of SQL Server 2000 and Exchange 2000 Server, and Visual SourceSafe 6. 0 for managing source code. Another tool is the Microsoft Development Environment, which lets you create workflow solutions based on either SQL Server or Exchange.
