Review AA Encyclopedia Of British & European Birds / BTL Publishing:It is well known that the urbanisation which accompanied the 19th and 20th centuries between people and the natural world. Paradoxically, while we are supposedly entering into a "knowledge-based economy", the specialised knowledge which previous generations had of the natural world has been eroded. It is because of this trend that the AA Interactive Encyclopedia of British & European Birds CD-ROM-which deals with the families, orders, ecology, evolution and distinguishing features of British and European birds-is particularly valuable. The information which it contains is first-rate, and the video links, while sometimes a little dark and unclear, are relevant and add to the knowledge of the user. One of the most interesting features of all is an interactive map showing the distributive patterns of 427 species of bird. The package comes with a variety of zones, each with different things to offer. There is a hide where you can explore habitats and bird watching, an aviary where you can learn about the structure and function of birds, and a feature called the "bird search", where you can test your avian knowledge. Although the graphics sometimes leave a little to be desired, this is still a first-rate product which should go a long way towards redressing the nature gap in the new technological age. -Toby Green.

Review German A+ / Transparent Language:German A+ is an ambitious CD-ROM-based language course, taking the learner from the very basics to intermediate level grammar and vocabulary in 15 well-structured and varied lessons. Although centred around a comprehensive grammar programme, there are also plenty of activities to practise listening, reading and even speaking, with the inclusion of an interactive conversation feature. Each lesson begins with an outline of the language to be covered, followed by practice sentences to introduce new grammar and vocabulary. Once happy that you can understand and use the structures, you move on to see how the new language items are used in wider contexts in dialogues and reading texts. Contexts and topics are wide-ranging, including Travel, Buying and Ordering Food and Business. Although it is hard to imagine teenagers finding the contexts very motivating, both tourist and business traveller alike will appreciate the range of authentic and useful language for everyday situations presented by native speakers of German. The user has access at each stage of the lesson to some impressive cross-referencing features. Meaning, translation and pronunciation of a new word or phrase are immediately to hand. Games, personal pronunciation analysis and vocabulary flashcards add variety to the lessons and there is also the option of testing your progress online. However, the user needs some grounding in the basics of grammar and connected terminology in order to find their way around the material at first, although a word tools feature is useful in explaining away some of the terms. Though this isn't the real-life museum you may have visited or hope to visit in person one day, it is the next best thing: a Louvre without crowds or security guards-one that's always open, where you can wander everywhere and return often. DVD-ROM is what makes this program superior to other virtual museum tours. Put simply, Le Louvre has more of everything: more tour information, more historical content and-most importantly-more works of art. With so much more room for data storage, Le Louvre is able to offer full-screen images of paintings and sculptures. What's more, these large images can be magnified still further, so that users can closely examine a piece. The size and quality of the images are absolutely stunning.
