Review SmartDisk MVP / SmartDisk:Once you start building up a large collection of digital media, it gets hard to manage it all. SmartDisk MVP collects your media files into albums and allows you to keep track of all your digital pictures, videos and music in one place, making it easy to browse, print or burn them to CD. Whatever type of file you're working with, the interface is the same and you can add all new files to SmartDisk's albums automatically ready to label, search, browse as thumbnails, print out or burn onto a Video CD that can be played on most DVD players. SmartDisk MVP comes with a handy bundle of extras to make the most of your files and newly-burned CDs. FotoCanvas is a simple image-editing package with a red-eye filter and other tools for fixing problems with your photos; PowerDVD lets you play back Video CDs (and DVDs) on your PC and the Neato CD labelling kit lets you print labels and stick them to your CDs: you even get two blank CD-RW discs. The only limitation with this software is that you have to record an entire CD at one time (Disk At Once) rather than being able to record files onto a CD-RW as and when you feel like it (packet writing). But if you don't need that facility, SmartDisk MVP is a simple way to keep tabs on your media files and make Video CDs that can be enjoyed on TV and PC. -Mary Branscombe.

Review Magix Music Maker UK Garage Edition / Fasttrak:Over recent years, software makers Fast Trak have garnered a reputation for slick and sensible DIY music software that gets you shakin' yo ass in no time. Music Maker UK Garage Edition, the latest runner from Fast Trak's commendable Magix label, should do little to dent that enviable reputation. The format is simple, clean and user-friendly, yet it also has a enough knobs and add-ons, and enough colourful and funky packaging, to keep almost everyone happy. The basic console is a kind-of on-screen graphic equaliser, enabling you to take real instruments and lay down digital tracks, or go straight to the on-disc synths and riffs, and start from there. To help you in this, MusicMaker UK Garage Edition comes with the usual gizmos: drum 'n' bass machine, beat box, vocaliser, scratch box, effects (reverb, delay, stereoFX, pitchshifting and so on)-not to mention the 2,657 samples of disc or any of the (presumably) millions of samples available online. And once you've done all that you can then publish your results on the Web, burn them on to your own CD and even make a video of synchronised SFX designed to accompany your trax. Any drawbacks? It has to be said this garage version isn't especially garage-y in itself; but anyone with a modicum of musical ability should, with the aid of this CD-ROM, be able to make almost any old tune just as dirty and street as they like. -Sean Thomas.

Review High In The Sky-Middlesex / Europress:Although the CD-ROM package High in the Sky is not quite a replacement for that bird's-eye view, it is certainly the next best thing. Produced by the well-known aerial photographers Getmapping, it includes detailed aerial views of everywhere from Avon to Worcestershire, via most of the counties in between. It claims to come with photographs from "over half a million miles across the UK. " While exhaustively trawling through this footage might not be for everyone, the views will surely be appreciated for the aerial panoramas it gives of places that people know well. The CD-ROM comes with a zoom function that allows the user to focus closely on specific points-you may even be able to pick out your own house on some of the more detailed footage. The software also allows you to measure the distance between two points on a photograph, so that you will be able to discern how long a particular walk or cycle ride may be (rather than exaggerating to make yourself feel fitter). These features illustrate how the designers have cannily targeted the package as a natty gift item, which will surely be appreciated by many people who hitherto have been "difficult" to buy presents for. There is no longer any need to pick up the first paperback that comes to hand. Although the notion of looking at wide-open spaces through a computer screen, rather than getting out into them, may seem somewhat postmodern, this is definitely an entertaining package which will interest many people. -Toby Green.

The software can also be used for assembling and mastering different music sources including from CD Audio, Minidisc and Vinyl recordings. During the recording process, especially from analogue sources such as Vinyl records, extraneous noise can be added to your audio files. This can be anything from pops and crackles to annoying hiss. Audio Cleaning Lab acts as a set of specialized filters to remove these artifacts and improve the quality of your audio files. Once you have cleaned your audio files, you can even remaster them, enhancing the stereo panorama, altering the frequency spectrum or changing the audio dynamics with compressors. Finally you can create your own audio CDs with the in-built CD burning engine. The interface looks like a professional mixing studio, with each element having a Hi-Fi equipment look and feel. To adjust the settings of a particular audio mastering, simply click on the button and the relevant interface appears.
