Photos on CD & DVD allows you to take digital photographs from cameras, scanners, hard drives and more and organise them into folders and galleries, applying a level of editing along the way to remove blemishes, scratches, red-eye and other defects. Once they've been error-corrected you can choose to create a slideshow of images, adding in a soundtrack and even text messages and notes to accompany each image. Finally, the files can be collated and burned to a CD or DVD for distribution in a variety of formats, including DVD, VCD and Super VCD, which will play back on the majority of home entertainment machines and PCs. Movies on CD and DVD allows users to capture, edit and output their video memories in a comprehensive range of formats from simple data files for backup through to full-featured DVD files that will allow TV playback. The package is divided into three segments; video capture, editing and the final output stage. Each is presented in a patient and easy to understand fashion, hand-holding the user through the process of cleaning up and preparing the movie footage for best possible quality. The video capture is good for a package of this quality and the software can auto-detect scene changes, making it a snip to record material from camcorder, VHS or even TV (with optional video capture card). The editing portion of the package provides the weak link in the chain. While it's perfectly adequate for very basic tidying it's no Adobe Premiere and functionality is limited. However the third stage of the process is a real winner, allowing the authoring of DVD and VCD title and menu screens to add a degree of polish to the final production. Beginners to the field of video editing will find a lot to draw them to Movies on CD and DVD as it makes the process very easy to follow. Review Illuminatus Opus / Digital Workshop:Illuminatus Opus is a powerful presentation-creation tool along the lines of Microsoft Powerpoint, but with some notable differences. Illuminatus Opus allows you to combine text, photos, clip art, animations and video into presentations, demonstrations or multimedia publications. In some ways, though, it may be more like Macromedia's Flash or Director software in that you are able to create animations and interactive applications without programming. Beyond sales presentations, there is a huge potential for creating educational games, home-movie compilations, slide shows, "visual narrative" projects and other publications. The real strength of Illuminatus Opus is in its flexibility. It is compatible with all of the standard graphics file types, plus avi, mpg, Quicktime, asf, wav and mp3 files for audio and video. You can use the ready-made presentation templates or create your own from scratch. All of the usual presentation tricks are here such as transitions between pages and animated text. The easy-to-use interface also allows you to create actions such as starting a video or audio clip or switching to other page-based triggers such as mouse-clicks or rollovers. You can create presentations in non-rectangular formats if the whim takes you. [+]You can even publish your presentations to the Web so that they can be viewed with a browser plug-in called [iO]. Review Panda Antivirus Titanium / Panda Software:Panda Antivirus Titanium offers protection for all versions of Windows, although it is not designed for networks. It's a particularly well-designed and easy-to-use system. Installation is straightforward, although you have to register with Panda in order to obtain a years' supply of free updates over the Internet. The service also includes technical support and the ability to e-mail suspicious files for checking. The system is configured and operated using a neat Web-like interface. A feature called Permanent Protection runs in the background and automatically scans any files that are transferred through the system, including Internet downloads, compressed files, and emails as they arrive. Another key feature is scanning, which lets you run scans on all or selected drives in your computer, and on emails stored in Outlook or Outlook Express. As with any anti-virus system, regular updates are essential, and you can set Panda Antivirus Titanium to check for updates whenever there is a live Internet connection. A nice touch is the ability to scan the floppy drive automatically on shutdown, just in case you left a virus-infected bootable floppy in the drive without realising it. You can also create rescue disks for starting a computer safely after a disaster, although this feature does not work on Windows 2000 or XP. [+]The emphasis in Panda Titanium is on ease of use, with near-foolproof installation and configuration. For those who want additional features, Panda Platinum has extras such as quarantining, port blocking, email alerts and the ability to exclude specified files.
