Review Avanquest Software / Millennium 20th Century Day By Day RRP: £15.64
Price: £4.97

Review Millennium 20th Century Day By Day / Avanquest Software:

How much of the last century do you remember? As a dramatic chronicle of human life, the 20th century is difficult to beat. Two World Wars broke out, the communist political system in the Soviet Union suddenly collapsed, Nelson Mandela was set free, historic trips were made to the Moon, England actually won the World Cup and Charles and Diana were married before a global TV audience. Dorling Kindersley's 20th Century Day by Day brings the century alive again. You're invited to experience events as they happened. The conflicts and scandals that shocked society, the ideas that turned the world upside down and the people who made it happen. As you enter a 3-D virtual newsroom and click on photographs and typewriters you are led back into the decades of the 20th century. In the 1960s you can read about John Lennon, follow the events of the Vietnam War and hear Martin Luther King talking of his dream of a new kind of society. In the "Twentieth Century in Focus" section, you can re-live breakthroughs in space exploration. Watch videos of rockets taking off and see Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. Throughout the CD-ROM you can search for famous people and places; follow a story of events through from start to finish or simply browse the headlines and biographies. [+]
This is a highly stimulating and exciting multi-media chronicle of the 20th century. More than 34,000 days of history are played back like breaking news stories. It will be difficult for dusty history textbooks to compete with this entertaining record of a rollercoaster century. Parents, grandparents and children will love it. -Justin Hunt.

Review Her Interactive / Nancy Drew Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (PC) Weight: 0.31 Kg
RRP: £19.99
Price: £19.98

Review Nancy Drew Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (PC) / Her Interactive:

Amateur detectives everywhere, young and old alike will love the Nancy Drew Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake interactive mystery game. Produced by HER Interactive, it invites junior or senior detectives (players choose the level of difficulty) to embark on a mission to become Nancy Drew's eyes and ears, and help solve a mystery. Players are taken to a dreamy summer cabin at Moon Lake and here the nightmare begins. Nancy is informed by the nearby lake's residents that a well-known gangster had lived here long ago with his pet dogs. Howls can be heard. The locals believe the dogs have come back from the grave to protect their master's villainous past. Are the legends true? Or is there a simpler explanation? What about the neighbours-are they telling the truth? What secrets might be lurking in the dark caverns beneath the lake? Don't waste time-you must find the answers before the hounds discover your presence. Installation is quite straightforward, but as the game is aimed at children aged 10 years and above, it may need overseeing by a more competent adult. On completion, players are immediately invited to choose the level of difficulty and it is a particularly good idea to take advantage of the excellent tutorial session. Here you learn how to navigate, and explanations are also given about different mouse, cursor and arrow commands, with tips being offered about "Hot Spots" and how to view objects. [+]
Accompanying the CD-ROM is an excellent pamphlet dealing with all aspects of the game. The language is simple and straightforward and help can be accessed from the menu screen, where useful directions can be found. Before commencing, it is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the Menu screen, particularly the Game Setup option which, on clicking, allows you to personalise the game in the way you prefer to play, changing options for voice, music, special effects, and closed captioning, which when switched on, makes written descriptions appear in the text window for sounds and noises. This is especially helpful as for some the written word, accompanied by the spoken word, is more helpful when absorbing instructions. -Susan Naylor.

Review Avanquest Software / I Love Spelling! RRP: £9.99
Price: £9.77

Review I Love Spelling! / Avanquest Software:

DK Interactive's I Love Spelling is a souped-up spelling lesson loaded with characters, humour and more than 5,000 words ranging in difficulty from "here" to "Kalahari". A game-show host with a skewed toupee leads kids to one of four planets: On "Aquatica", intrepid spellers hear a word, then chase and burst bubbles containing the letters that spell the word, all while a gangster fish named the Codfather eggs them on; "Amphibia" is a pond-like planet where kids guess the mystery word by choosing the correct letters with the help of a bluesy frog-picture a game of Hangman with swampy ambience. On "Anagrama" kids turn scrambled letters into words by dropping placard-bearing bunnies down the correct hole, while planet "Arachnia" hosts a spidery spelling bee in which kids hear a word, then spell it out. Two more games help kids recognise misspelled words and choose the correct spelling. In "Word Attack", players must quickly click on the correctly spelled word from misspellings that hurtle toward them onscreen. Kids can easily ace the activity by clicking frantically until they randomly land on the correct spelling, so don't be too impressed if your child is a high scorer here. Three levels, customisable word lists and places to peek at scores and misspelled words make this program parent friendly; a two-player function is another nice feature. Our biggest complaint: that this program lacks "the big goal"-the only rewards here are points, a weak "bonus round" and the ubiquitous printable certificate. A final compliment: puns and word play in the script reinforce the potential for fun in words and letters. (Ages 7-11) -Anne Erickson I Love. [+]
No other CD-ROM matches the I love series' blend of solid, curriculum-oriented content and incentive-driven game play - all brought to life by humorous characters and wacky situations. No matter what your child's level of comprehension, this program will reinforce skills in key curriculum areas, increase understanding of concepts such as fractions, geometry and measurements, spelling and scientific principles and develop the real-world and critical-thinking skills essential to success in school and beyond. Windows 98/NT4/XP with sound card. Age 7 to 11.

Review Avanquest Software / My First CD-Rom: Dictionary RRP: £4.99
Price: £0.80

Review My First CD-Rom: Dictionary / Avanquest Software:

The superb, interactive My First Dictionary from Dorling Kindersley has been purposely designed so that very young children can use it to learn along with their parents, or alternatively, older children can use it alone. The age range therefore is quite broad, but it is aimed primarily at 3-7 year olds. Older children can use it to great benefit to practice specific areas which may need extra work. It's been proven that a child's learning becomes fun when it is presented in an entertaining, instructive and structured way (so they often learn without them even realising). My First Dictionary CD-ROM follow these rules. The easy-to-use games and activities, with more than 1,000 word definitions, are accompanied and supported by brightly coloured and appealing animations and narrations that will engage and interest children who are just learning to read, as well as those who have more advanced reading skills. Using this CD-ROM will help your child to learn the meaning of words, to practice spelling, to develop an awareness of relationships between words, to build vocabulary, to learn and extend PC skills (particularly mouse control), to acquire knowledge and practice alphabetical order, to recognise phonetic sounds, and to gain good, solid foundations in reading and spelling. There are four easy-to-use word and sound games: "Spell It", "Alphabet Scramble", "Guess What?" and "What's That Noise?", all accessible via the menu. Particularly entertaining is the "Surprise Me!" game, accessible via the tool bar. In addition, dictionaries can be personalised, entries can be copied and printed, stars can be earned as rewards, stickers can be collected, and the spelling activities have three levels of difficulty. [+]
The package is not accompanied by an instruction pamphlet, but simple instructions for installation are displayed on the CD-ROM itself and excellent help for parents on every aspect of the package can be accessed via the tool bar. Explanations and animations can be switched off for older children. -Susan Naylor Parent assisted learning at its best, these CDs are fantastically simple, encouraging pre-schoolers to think for themselves through play. Windows 95/98/XP, Mac.
