Review Hasbro / Tonka Space Station RRP: £19.99
Price: £2.46

Review Tonka Space Station / Hasbro:

Construct and operate a functioning space station with an arsenal of out-of-this-world Tonka vehicles. Drive a Tonkonium Extraction Vehicle through a maze of lava pools and explosives, or speed a Terra Racer through the low-gravity zone of the station's sporting arena to entertain your station crew. In Tonka Space Station, you decide whether to build defence grids to demolish hazardous space waste, or focus on food production for your many hungry workers. With the ultimate motor pool at your fingertips, the fate of the station is entirely in your hands. Doing the job well can result in promotion-work your way from a lowly Photon 3rd Class all the way up to Galactic Commander. The game's primary goal is to build a functioning station, one that balances the needs of its residents with other important considerations like safety, productivity and research. To this end, players build modules-sporting arenas, habitats, communication hubs, defence grids and harvest areas-on the platforms available in the station. To build a module, you are given a specialised Tonka vehicle and an arcade-style mission; to construct a harvest module, for example, players drive a Bio-harvester through an obstacle course of hostile alien plant life, snatching edible berries from the jaws-er, pods-of the carnivorous vegetation. Tonka Space Station has some stunning anti-gravity effects, and the machinery and settings of the space-station activities are satisfyingly realistic. The need to stay on top of safety, industrial output and the happiness of the station's people provides an engaging framework for the main focus of the game: the arcade games and the Tonka vehicles these activities employ. [+]
In this sense, Tonka Space Station is slightly disappointing. The variation between the vehicles is not nearly as wide as it could be, and players accustomed to real-world Tonka products may yearn for more options than steering, shooting and avoiding danger. None of the vehicles, in other words, does anything as amazingly cool as what even the simplest front-loader or backhoe can do. If you can get past that, however, this game is perfect for players who are interested in space sciences and enjoy simpler arcade-style activities. (Ages 5 and up) -Alyx Dellamonica.

Review Universal / Jurassic Park III Scan Command RRP: £34.99
Price: £29.97

Review Jurassic Park III Scan Command / Universal:

Jurassic Park III Scan Command CD-ROM is a rather novel idea for a game. The story outline is simple enough-Evil Dr Corts intends to take over the world with an army of mutated dinosaurs. To make matters worse, the bad Doctor is holding five children captive in Jurassic Park, and you want to rescue them. To do this you need your own dinosaurs, which you'll grow by manipulating their DNA. This is where the fun comes in, as you use bar codes to help give them their characteristics. The software comes with a bar code scanner for the capture of these data-bits. It is about 18cm long, made of blue plastic, and looks rather like an oversized marker pen. It needs three AAA batteries to supply its power. The first barcode you need is in the game manual. Thereafter you can wander through the house and beyond, grabbing barcodes from wherever you like. [+]
The scanner can store up to 25 bar codes at a time, and you download them to the PC using a serial connection and then create the DNA and powerful dinosaurs. And let the action begin! Jurassic Park III Scan Commandis a very clever idea. All the scanner really does is collect random sets of numbers, but it's neat, and once you get the hang of scanning, very easy. The multi-level game isn't bad, either. -Sandra Vogel Plus FREE Dino Defender A terrible storm has knocked out power in Jurassic Park and the huge dinosaurs are on the rampage. As a member of the elite Dino Defender squadron, it's your job to capture as many dinosaurs as possible while you try to restore power in this dramatic and exciting CD-ROM game. Review TDK 5450270000319 / Curious George Learning Games Price: £19.99

Review Curious George Learning Games / TDK 5450270000319:

Curious George stops getting into trouble in his Learning Games to direct young children in their own discoveries. This CD-ROM teaches kids shapes, colours, pattern recognition, rhyming and more, while offering fun animation consistent with the beloved storybooks. Games such as Star Patrol, Pie Fight and Jingles Jukebox help up to eight different users develop new skills, and extras like the Progress Report help parents track their child's learning. This program stresses many of the same skills that other pre-school software programs cover, but with an additional element of challenge: the different skill levels offer basic to advanced lessons that support continued learning and add to the longevity of the program. For example, Star Patrol not only supports early-learning concepts like shape and colour recognition but also introduces geometry-trapezoids and the like-a subject not ordinarily introduced to pre-schoolers. And to keep the program fun, the games are smartly animated with humorous, pie-in-the-face antics. This CD-ROM may not cast George in his traditional role of mischief, but he defiantly adds to standard educational software fare with his fun and playful learning activities. The animation is extremely entertaining-we see everything from George getting sent into space to pies flying not only at onscreen characters but also at players! The necessity of reading the directions aloud dictates parental involvement, as do the parental controls, which include the ability to track a child's performance. -Madeleine J. Miller.

Review Avanquest Software 5016488019781 / Letts Key Stage 1 Learning All About Numbers RRP: £9.99
Price: £1.68

Review Letts Key Stage 1 Learning All About Numbers / Avanquest Software 5016488019781:

Learning all about Numbers provides children with eight different areas that they can work through to develop a wide range of number skills. The activities and games in this program help to consolidate mathematical skills that children are learning as part of their numeracy hour at school. Skills developed include number recognition, counting skills, sorting, ordering numbers and identifying missing numbers. Children could also develop their ability to continue a pattern and copy a given pattern. Additionally, the program consolidates children's understanding of "more". There are very simple adding and taking-away activities that involve numbers to 10. The concept of a number line is introduced through two activities. However, this part of the program is more of a demonstration and it is a shame that the children are not more fully involved. This program also helps to consolidate mathematical vocabulary that young children need to be familiar with. There is also an option to do some writing. [+]
Unfortunately, this part of the program is not well explained and it is by trial and error that it is utilised to its full potential. There are helpful word lists and images can be imported onto the page, so that children could make up their own number problems or books. Learning all about Numbers would be a good program to use with children aged 4-5 years as it consolidates numbers to 10 although it would not perhaps be challenging enough for children aged 6-7-years. The graphics are good and young children would enjoy the moving images and the range of different activities. -Amanda York.
