Review Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia / Softkey:Mosby's Medical Encyclopedia on CD-ROM has made it even easier to look up your health problems, containing just about all there is to know in the field of contemporary medical expertise. Mosby's is one of the biggest names in American Medical Reference. For 75 years flu victims in Fresno, syphilitics in Seattle, plague carriers in Peoria and hypochondriacs in Hackensack have been checking its authoritative pages for the right terms, drugs and treatments to go with their condition. The format is admirably clear. A column on the left of the screen indicates the various available sources on-disc. You can click on each to access the subsection you want. Most useful is maybe the encyclopedia, which gives plain, lucid, informative definitions of some 20,000 medically related terms. Below the encyclopedia is a very handy drug guide, affording the scientific background and uses of multifarious pills, medicines and remedies, from Ibuprofen to Intaferon, Temazepam to Tixylix (one problem here for British users is the American bias: occasionally drugs will be listed under their US trade name, which differs from the UK version). Equally interesting is the "human atlas", which diagrammatically maps nervous, lymphatic, musculatory and digestive systems, among others; the on-disc Internet guide, which links you to pertinent Web sites and apposite net-addresses, is pretty cool too. In fact there's so much information here it might prove slightly overwhelming for the layman, and in some ways the CD-ROM is aimed as much at professional users as the needy family or inquisitive individual. [+]
But for those willing to swallow the odd technical term it's still pretty hard to think of a better single-disc medical dictionary on the CD ROM market. -Sean Thomas.

Review Mr Men & Little Miss Mr Noisy Presents Balloon War / Avanquest Software:In a Mr. Men style variation on the old arcade classic Donkey Kong, Mr. Noisy Presents Balloon War is a running and jumping platform game where you have to make your way to the top level, grab a balloon and then drop it on your opponent, whether you're playing against the computer or against a friend. Each player starts the game with five lives and along the way you can snaffle bonus points by running over rabbits, cakes, ladybugs, carrots and aliens. The real fun starts when you encounter the various obstacles-there are worms that burrow through the platforms, knocking you over, and there's Mr. Noisy himself, who shouts so loud that should you be in the way he knocks you over as well. In addition, other Mr. Men pop up here and there, altering your character's behaviour, sometimes making you do things in reverse, slowing you down, or giving you an extra life. As in the other games in this series, there are six characters to choose from, each with strengths and weaknesses that alter the way the game's played. Little Miss Late for example, responds to keyboard commands after a slight delay, but can jump higher than most other characters. [+]
Each game has five themed backgrounds, three levels of difficulty (within which you can set the overall level to easy or hard) and applies the basic laws of physics. Thus, should you grab a balloon and then drop down to a lower platform for a better shot, you can't jump back up again until you've dumped the balloon because you're too heavy. Similarly, if you stand still and throw a balloon, it falls straight down, but if you throw it while running, it moves in the same direction. This is good, addictive fun for six to 10 year olds. It's easy to pick up and the various levels of difficulty, changes of scene and character variations mean that it'll stay fun. -Rob Beattie.
