Review Focus Multimedia Ltd / Dogz 5 RRP: £9.99
Price: £2.61

Review Dogz 5 / Focus Multimedia Ltd:

The Dogz of Dogz 5 are virtual pets and they live on your PC. They can run across your desktop, travel and explore faraway Playscenes, (a Canadian snow scene, a Big Top in a European Circus, a Wild West Town or an Arabian Palace); they can play in their Home Playscenes (Kitchen, Backyard or Salon) and have loads of fun in tailor-made Playscenes. Feed them and love them, breed them and play with them. You can adopt as many Dogz as you want, but you must remember to take care of them all. Did you know that Dogz have a tail to keep them balanced? That they have a keen sense of smell, and that their paws are padded and fuzzy, and that they use them to run, dig and scratch? Did you also know that you can get a good idea of how your pet is feeling if you look into its alert and expressive eyes? Best of all, Dogz love to be fussed and petted. Watch them grow from little baby puppies into adult Dogz. Although aimed at young children, this package will be much more enjoyable for a child who can read and follow instructions, as it is necessary to follow onscreen directions. The program is therefore most suitable for a minimum age of 7-8 years old. The installation takes quite a while (information is on the CD-ROM sleeve) and help may be needed as monitor settings may need to be adjusted and it may also be necessary to ascertain if Acrobat Reader 5. 0 is installed (the user manual cannot be accessed without this software). [+]
It is absolutely essential to study the manual closely before adopting any Dogz and it is a good idea to print it off for easy and quick reference. It is an excellent manual that is well set out, and it explains everything in simple, straightforward language, making it accessible to children. Now for the fun! Choose from one of 15 breeds of Dogz, from Bulldogs to Sheepdogs, from Muts to Chihuahuas, with all their different personalities, likes and dislikes, but don't adopt too many-they must all be cared for. Love them and remember to feed them. Give them water, medicine when they're sick and don't forget to brush them. Exercise and play regularly with your Dogz; reward them for good behaviour and squirt them with water if they misbehave. Train them to do tricks. There are more than 100 toys to play with-lucky Dogz find some and there are more to be earned when you play the five mini games. Collect wonderful gifts with them during their doggy travels, such as exotic jewels. Treat your Dogz well and earn yourself a happy-pet certificate. Choose items of clothing and accessories to dress them; watch your Dogz fall in love and have puppies, and access their family trees as far back as eight generations. A Web Fun Pack is included, which contains Petz clipart, animations and backgrounds, all Internet-ready to enable you to create your own Web pages. Particularly helpful are the tips on day and night cycles, how Petz grow, what happens when you cheat, how you can acquire new toys, and what to do if your pet runs away. Dogz 5 contains new features, but owners of previous Dogz can bring their adopted pets into this new version. Compatible with Catz 5, put the two programs together to create more breeds, fun and Petz. -Susan Naylor.

Review Dorling Kindersley / Become A Science Explorer RRP: £9.99
Price: £3.46

Review Become A Science Explorer / Dorling Kindersley:

Science made simple! Written in simple language which is easily understood by younger children. Topics such as heat, sound, forces, electricity, living things, materials and simple machines are covered with inspired graphics. Windows 95/98/XP Become a Science Explorer is another excellent CD-ROM from Dorling Kindersley aimed at children aged 6-10 years old. Children will love the challenge of going on a mission and trying to become a Science Explorer. Fizz, the helpful ball of energy, guides children around the different environments where children can carry out activities, answer questions or look at information screens. The graphics are excellent and there is a wealth of scientific information for children to find out in a variety of interesting ways. Children's learning is also cleverly extended when they're given further explanations once they have answered a question. Children are rewarded with prizes, badges, stickers, rosettes, medals and the ultimate prize of becoming a Science Explorer. They can use their Science Workbook to make scientific observations, answer questions and collect stickers-guaranteed to turn any child into a budding scientist. There is a range of science experiments that can be printed out and undertaken. [+]
These would be ideal for parents to go through with younger children using the comprehensive parents' guide. There are also some very good worksheets, which would help to consolidate children's learning. Become a Science Explorer is a fantastic CD-ROM that really supports the science curriculum in schools. This would be an excellent buy for parents or teachers of children aged 6-10 years old. -Amanda York.

Review Avanquest Software / Mr Men & Little Miss The Adventures of Mr Tickle RRP: £4.99
Price: £0.01

Review Mr Men & Little Miss The Adventures of Mr Tickle / Avanquest Software:

The Adventures of Mr Tickle is a point-and-click adventure and puzzle-solving game for children of 4-8 years, set in the Mr Men village where everything has somehow got completely mixed up, rather as if Mr Muddle had designed it. The trees are orange, the sky green, birds fly backwards, sheep fall asleep in trees, cows toot like car horns and horses quack like ducks. The game opens with three characters in the square. Miss Somersault has a special spray can which can respray everything the right colour, Mr Noisy hoovers up all the sounds that have become trapped in the wrong animals and then redistributes them, while Miss Busy puts animals, trees and houses back in their correct places. The three games are designed to teach kids some simple logical thinking about the colours of animals and objects, the sounds they make and their natural place in the village. There are other challenges too-for example, when Mr Noisy tries to help the bird that's sitting on the telephone wire, he's not tall enough and has to go into the phone box and call for help, picking the Mr Man that's going to be able to reach the bird (hint: it's probably not Mr Greedy). The characterisation is lots of fun, the animation excellent and two levels of difficulty make it suitable for the target age group. It's also set in the same environment as The Adventures of Little Miss Scatterbrain and The Adventures of Mr Greedy and kids who've played one game will be able to navigate round the others more easily. -Rob Beattie.

Review BBC Multimedia / Bob the Builder Can We Fix It? RRP: £19.99
Price: £3.75

Review Bob the Builder Can We Fix It? / BBC Multimedia:

Can We Fix It?. Of course we can, and with this BBC software package little builders will be better equipped than ever!. Featuring the chirpy Bob and his mechanical multitude of talented friends, this fun package is a mixture of educational encouragement and pure out-and-out fun. Once loaded, you are invited to move the cursor around Wendy's office to select your tasks: hover over the phone, and it rings with a plumbing job; go near the fax, and a job comes in for Roley. Keep moving around, and you will find enough jobs to keep little fingers and minds busy for hours. In "Hedgehog Rescue", the aim is firstly to help Lofty the Crane build a tunnel to save the scared hedgehogs from crossing the road. Children must match pipe shapes to tunnel shapes, and construct the route. The next, more difficult game, involves Wendy herding the hedgehogs into the tunnel-easier than it sounds, since one particularly persistent hedgehog seems unwilling to go. In "Travis' Race Day", choose between Scoop or Dizzy to a head-to-head around an obstacle-strewn track. Guide your challenger by mouse or arrow keys-again, not as easy as it sounds, and a great developmental aid for hand-to-eye co-ordination. [+]
"Can We Build It?" involves knocking down an unsafe bridge, then using colour recognition to match the bricks to rebuild it. Roley needs a hand with unruly tarmac in "Bubble Trouble", when you must guide him over the bubbles to even out the road. And in "Scary Spud", you must move Spud around the screen to scare off the crows. But the crowning glory is "Wendy's Birthday", where guests first decorate her cake then join in the fun line dancing. Also included on each game is "Where's Pilchard?", a hide-and-seek game for the shy, blue cat. Accompanied throughout by Neil Morrisey's narration and the superb music from the TV show, (also now a CD single), this package builds on many elementary educational skills to make little builders into fully fledged Bobs. And while it is not that quick to load (missing plug-ins are provided, but it may take some time) it is well worth the wait. Testers of around two years old found this package fun and evocative of their favourite TV character, though they did require constant supervision and most of the games were beyond mastering. This is a superb educational aid and lots of fun. (Suitable for ages 2 to 6). -Lucie Naylor.

Review LEGO / LEGO Creator Harry Potter RRP: £29.99
Price: £1.75

Review LEGO Creator Harry Potter / LEGO:

Combining one of childhood's most enduring toys with the current craze for Harry Potter, LEGO Creator Harry Potter has a magical capacity for entertaining young players. Use standard LEGO blocks to construct a world for Harry, Ron and Hermione then turn them loose in it. Whether setting up a postal route for Harry's owl, practising spells with the kids of Hogwarts or using the workshop to configure the LEGO buildings and structures, players will find this game thoroughly absorbing. LEGO Creator Harry Potter is atypical of children's programs that usually run players through a fixed set of activities or educational challenges. Instead, the designers have made a serious effort to leave things wide open and flexible, sticking close to the reason why kids enjoy LEGO in the first place. Players can place LEGO units-animals, characters, blocks, doors, chests-around the landscape of Hogwarts. But this is no mere simulation of a real-life play experience-this LEGO world is animated! With a single mouse click, players bring their creations to life. Place a LEGO snake on-screen in this game and it will promptly slither for cover. Likewise, the Harry Potter characters-who are incredibly charming when rendered as standard LEGO people-will move around the environment created for them, even interacting when they come together. While the complexity of this package makes it tougher to master than many games, a series of tutorials disguised as challenges can smooth out the learning curve. [+]
Users explore the school, build LEGO trains, find lost animals and as they do, they learn the lay of the land. The challenges have another motivator built in-without them, you cannot cast all the magical spells otherwise available to Harry and the others. LEGO Creator Harry Potter frees you to build a stage and place upon it the well-known characters from the JK Rowling novels. What happens next is limited only by your imagination. -Alyx Dellamonica.

Review Dorling Kindersley / My First CD-Rom: Number RRP: £9.99
Price: £1.78

Review My First CD-Rom: Number / Dorling Kindersley:

Dorling Kindersley has produced an excellent series of interactive parent-assisted learning packages designed for young children, of which My First Number is one. The CD-ROM is aimed at children aged 3-5 years and is especially useful for pre-school children or those needing more practice in early learning number skills. The package has been specifically designed to give youngsters an introduction to counting and sorting, and to help them gain confidence in using a computer. The games have been developed to allow children to play them on their own, but help may be needed initially, until youngsters get used the format. Make the sessions happy and relaxed, helping your child to learn with lots of fun. When playing alone, the fun will continue as they make decisions for themselves, and so their learning carries on without them even knowing. Game speeds and levels of difficulty can be altered, progress can be tracked and measured and help is automatically adjusted according to a child's responses. There are five easy games to play and they have been designed to be played in order. Meet Little Penguin and White Bear, appealing and humorous characters who use lots of songs, rhymes and animations to give practice in counting, number recognition, colour, and recognition of 2-D shapes, ordering numbers to create correct counting sequences, and practice in developing problem-solving skills. The CD-ROM is easy to install (instructions are on the disc, and there are comprehensive support notes for parents with full explanations about the games and activities that are accessed from the parent icon on the tool bar). [+]
This is a valuable introduction to key mathematical concepts capitalising on the natural eagerness young children have to learn. -Susan Naylor.
