Review AA A To B Britain Journey Planner 2000 / BTL Publishing:This no-frills journey-planning utility calculates detailed driving instructions for mainland Britain, with text output that can be pasted into other applications or printed directly. Along with the suggested route it gives distances and a journey time. The ability to input costings per mile (or kilometre) and per hour will be useful for budgeting business travel or deliveries, although the timings are rather ambitious. Because the program is simple and does not need to display any maps, it takes only 12 MB of disk space, making it ideal for portable use. A starting point and a destination are checked against a gazetteer of 150,000 place names, including villages, towns, districts of larger cities and major attractions. Northern Ireland and outlying islands are not covered. The routes show road numbers, junction numbers and landmarks such as pubs on the way. For example, here is a short journey from Derby to Nottingham: Follow signs Nottingham A52 Junction with A61 Take right-hand lane to cross flyover Junction with B6003 At roundabout take 2nd exit Bramcote Roundabout Keep forward across roundabout Junction with A6484 At roundabout take 2nd exit Junction with A6200/A6514 At roundabout take 2nd exit A6200 (signposted City Centre) Total time 0:23 Such a bare-bones application will not meet every user's needs. Review Letts Key Stage 1 Learning All About Shapes / Avanquest Software 5016488019798:Learning all about Shapes provides children with a wide range of activities and is excellent for developing young children's understanding of shape. The activities and games in this program help to consolidate mathematical skills that children are learning as part of their numeracy hour at school. Skills developed include identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes, understanding right angles, understanding nets of shapes, lines of symmetry and sorting using Carroll and Venn diagrams. Very clear definitions of shapes are given which explain and use the mathematical language that children need to be familiar with. This program is made more interesting by video clips and slide shows. Children can create their own slide shows and shape pictures with images provided. The quiz is very good for revising 2-D and 3-D shape names and the game that involves directing the turtle or butterfly through the grid is excellent for developing children's understanding of turns. There is also an option to do some writing. Unfortunately, this part of the program is not well explained and it is by trial and error that it is utilised to its full potential. There are helpful word lists to support children's writing and images can be imported onto the page so that children could make up their own shape books. Review GCSE Maths / Europress:This CD-ROM, designed for use within Windows 95 or 98 on a PC, endeavours to form the basis of both tutorial and revision notes for the GCSE Maths course. It is not intended as a substitute for initial study, but as a tutorial to accompany the actual course. The material in this course consists of three basic types: interactive lessons, tests, and exams. The lessons are bright and witty, usually involving moving figures. Interactivity is urged, and includes working out problems (with drag and drop from multiple choice) and a pop up representation of a calculator with which to fill in or determine numbers or quantities to fill in blanks. As the material is installed and copied to disk, an individual course, including progress through it, can be personalised and charted. The complexity level of material and interactive elements can be selected in advance, and the effect is both dramatic and helpful. Accompanying the installation CD is a short manual with simple instructions and a headings summary of topics covered. Screens, which include some well-designed "cribs" (short, useful summaries presented in a visually easy to remember format) can usually be printed. This will prove to be a useful tool as part of a purposeful revision programme.
