Desk-chair travellers and students alike will love Microsoft Encarta Interactive World Atlas 2001, which offers more detail than any other atlas yet available, plus multimedia tours of hundreds of locations world-wide. Almost 2 million place names include practically everybody's hometown; the dynamic maps let the user follow chains of association beyond simple geography. Traditionalists will approve of the flat maps outlining bioregions, political demarcations and other qualities-all printable in a wide array of styles. Local place-name spellings, informative articles and numbers galore pepper the software with features not found in other references, but the key to Encarta's success is its optimisation of multimedia. Using images, sounds and Web links to surround the user with information, the Interactive World Atlas is both dazzling and useful. Reports are easy to complete-use the researcher tool to gather, organise and export information to Microsoft Office tools. Review Step-Up to SATS Year 4 / Knowledge Adventure 3348542166745:Step-up to SATs Year 4 is an excellent set of two CD-ROMs. For those children who have used the Year 3 package, the first CD is the same and allows children to visit Adi the friendly alien's spaceship. They can create their own character to play the games and create their own virtual room by selecting from designs. In Adi's room they can visit subject-based corners and find out a whole range of information about the solar system, different countries, endangered species and much, much more. The graphics are excellent and include video clips. Children can also create memos and write a diary and keep track of things by using the appointments calendar. The second CD-ROM allows children to practice their literacy and numerical skills by entering the English or the Maths space station, each of which is divided into three areas. The Learning Capsule consolidates work that is carried out as part of the Year 4 curriculum at school. Children can either choose which exercises to carry out or Adi, who takes into account their progress, can guide them. Teaching points are explained and children are given tips if they get the answer wrong. [+]Children can also look at multimedia documents and animated lessons if they need further explanations. Exercises include work on all areas of the English and Maths curriculum, for example, identifying which piece of text shows you that it is fiction, identifying proper nouns, completing number patterns, work on place value, decimals and so on. Children and parents can keep track of how they are doing by looking at the results sheets. As a reward, children are able to "buy" games to play when they have scored enough points. The Teaching Capsule provides children with challenges against the clock and memory games. This capsule is not quite as well matched as the Learning Capsule to the Year 4 curriculum, as some of the questions are a little easy, but children would really enjoy trying to beat the clock. The Resource Capsule gives excellent explanations of all the areas covered on these CD-ROMs and there are tips on how to write a summary and studying techniques. Despite the repetition with the Year 3 CD-ROM, Step-up to SATs Year 4 would be an excellent purchase for a Year 4 child (8-9 years old). The Learning Capsule provides excellent consolidation of work that is carried out in school and there are enough educational and fun activities to keep children busy for the whole year. -Amanda York.

Simply type in your name on a clipboard and the cheerful bus starts up and drives you into the town. You can visit the bakery, which resembles an enormous pink birthday cake, go to the fire station or play on the merry-go-round. The imaginative town automatically generates all kinds of sounds from birds singing to noisy police car sirens and offers a number of fun educational games. In the bakery, young children are invited to ice a cake. Each right move is praised and rewarded with stars. And in the fire station children can click around to match different objects-if they find two the same then the teddy bears can climb aboard the fire engine. This CD-ROM is accompanied by catchy songs and there is always a friendly character to explain what you can do. As soon as you leave an area they always say how sorry they are to see you go. Jump Ahead Nursery 2000 successfully creates a supportive and welcoming environment for learning. Review The Times GCSE Chemistry 2003/2004 Syllabus (Full National Curriculum) / The Times:The Times Revision Series GCSE Chemistry is an easy-to-use and very well put together revision aid that uses Explorer and Netscape browsers. It covers five subject areas all based on the GCSE 2003/4 syllabus and includes tests for each topic. The program allows children to use the study plan wizard to create their own revision schedule according to their exam board, syllabus and time available. Children can choose to focus on areas of weakness, work sequentially through units of work or devise their own personal plan. Detailed reports show the child how they are doing and whether their revision schedule is on track. The syllabus is covered in short units that are taught through explanations with text, diagrams and interactive activities. Questions take the form of multiple choice, labelling diagrams, analysis of tables, graphs and text. Children can also study examination techniques and practise these skills.
