Review Shakespeare on CD-ROM: Romeo and Juliet / BBC Multimedia:"Romeo, Romeo. ". There is a new answer to Juliet's age-old question-Romeo is on this fantastic CD-ROM. And not only is he lurking here, but it seems as though a breath of fresh air may yet revive him. Perhaps one of Shakespeare's most famous lines seems a little tired by now, but there's nothing tired about this product. As well as an audio performance of the play and some superb video footage from the BBC's lavish production, this package contains information which will be of interest to students, budding actors and even Shakespearean experts alike. A hexagonal homepage allows the user to click on one of several options. Each section houses several links and subsections, and here you come across information as diverse as the genesis of the myth of Romeo and Juliet in Ovid and Xenophon, Shakepeare's meditations on mortality, time and the family, and the importance of costume in Elizabethan theatre. This phenomenal breadth is quite apart from the pièce de résistance: the wonderful character résumés, complete with hypertext links to important moments in the play which illustrate the essence of the character in question. The most impressive thing about this CD-ROM is that it really gets you under the skin of the play in a new and interactive way, which makes it an excellent product, one that cannot be rated too highly. It proves that there is life in everything-even a line which has been so repeatedly quoted that it has become a cliché. -Toby Green.

Review Letts GCSE English 2003/2004 / Letts:The Letts range of GCSE titles are revision courses on CD-ROM covering every exam board. Each title is designed with the specific course in mind-you cannot revise the same way for each subject (as there are no set "right" or "wrong" answers in English, unlike Chemistry for example). Once the program has been installed (please note you will still need to put the CD in the drive due to the large amount of content) you will need to log in as a user. Multiple users can be entered and all individual scores and progress will be stored. You're now ready to revise. The main screen provides three main options-Revision, Progress and Mock Exam. "Revision" is broken into the main study sections and includes exam and revision hints and tips. "Progress" is where you'll find the records of results, how much content you've covered and which areas need more practice. The "Mock Exam" includes the answers, so you can test yourself first or run through the paper and view the answers at the same time. As well, the software comes with a manual that's also available online within the program, a timer which allows you to set limits for revision sessions and a pop-up notebook. [+]
Titles available in the Letts GCSE range are Maths, English, Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, French, German and Spanish.

Review Jump Ahead Starting School Age (Jewel Case) / Focus Multimedia Ltd 5031366013552:Starting School, aimed at children of four to five years old, is another first-class CD-ROM in Focus Multimedia's "Children" series, a range of fun and educational titles to entertain and encourage your children to develop important skills through play. The whole program exploits a child's curiosity by getting Hopsalot the Rabbit and his friends to take part in all sorts of activities using fun, music and games. These all teach essential skills for starting school, and this version (the original having been an award winner) features new graphics, extra phonics and the technology to assess skills. Children are encouraged to learn the alphabet, phonics, rhymes, word pairs, sentences, visual discrimination, numbers and counting, ordering and sequencing, shapes and colours, time concepts and listening skills. Throughout there are songs to learn and sing, as well as opportunities to earn gold stars as a reward and swap them for a trip to the Zoo. Progress can be monitored and a workbook can be printed out if desired. There is also a pamphlet that has basic technical and installation information, and this should be read before beginning. Obviously help will be needed as the program is aimed at four to five-year-olds, but it is well worth the effort as the rewards are significant. -Susan Naylor.

Review A Level Revision: Maths / Europress:This CD-ROM, designed for use within Windows 95 or 98 on a PC, endeavours to form the basis of revision notes for the A level Mathematics course-in particular the pure maths, mechanics and statistics modules. It is not intended as a substitute in any way for initial study or reference. Scores of sample questions, culled from actual examinations, are available by number along with full working out. Screens, which include some well-designed "cribs" (short, useful summaries presented in a visually easy to remember format) can usually be printed. This will prove to be a useful tool as part of a purposeful revision programme. Though the subjects covered are comprehensive and helpfully summarised on a few screen pages each, they are presented in no special order, so a student may find it difficult to locate, for example, clarifying information about a particular weak point in understanding. No part of the information on the CD is installed on the PC's hard disk. It's important to note that this product is in no way interactive. There are no multiple-choice questions with which a student can measure recall or performance. Also, operation is not spelled out, though it's hardly intuitive: loading a subject (or a sample exam question) can take twenty seconds, even on a high-speed CD reader, while the user is left wondering whether the program is responding at all. Review AA Encyclopedia Of British & European Birds / BTL Publishing:It is well known that the urbanisation which accompanied the 19th and 20th centuries between people and the natural world. Paradoxically, while we are supposedly entering into a "knowledge-based economy", the specialised knowledge which previous generations had of the natural world has been eroded. It is because of this trend that the AA Interactive Encyclopedia of British & European Birds CD-ROM-which deals with the families, orders, ecology, evolution and distinguishing features of British and European birds-is particularly valuable. The information which it contains is first-rate, and the video links, while sometimes a little dark and unclear, are relevant and add to the knowledge of the user. One of the most interesting features of all is an interactive map showing the distributive patterns of 427 species of bird. The package comes with a variety of zones, each with different things to offer. There is a hide where you can explore habitats and bird watching, an aviary where you can learn about the structure and function of birds, and a feature called the "bird search", where you can test your avian knowledge. Although the graphics sometimes leave a little to be desired, this is still a first-rate product which should go a long way towards redressing the nature gap in the new technological age. -Toby Green.
