Review Mr Men & Little Miss Mr Bump Presents the Mad Run / Avanquest Software:Mr. Bump Presents Mad Run is an arcade game for six to 10 year olds that will have them hooting with laughter and roaring with frustration. The object of the game is to complete one of eight themed race courses (savannah, marina, deep sea, desert, arctic, space, mountains and clouds) strewn with obstacles appropriate to that particular environment. Thus, underwater you'll have to avoid wrecks, reefs and electric eels and in the savannah you'll be troubled by boulders, trees, dirty great holes and, most annoying of all, Mr. Busy, who's in such a rush to get wherever he's going that he'll take you with him, whether you want to go or not. Elsewhere, running over other Mr. Men in the race will affect your character in different ways, perhaps adding speed or strength or making them do everything backwards. The purpose of each race is to rescue one of the Mr. Men who's done something daft: Mr. Dizzy is blundering into quicksand, Miss Scatterbrain (minus her sunblock) has fallen asleep in the desert, Mr. [+]
Muddle has got tangled in his fishing line and so on. Your job is to make it to the end of each course and rescue them before time runs out. You can play as one of six Mr. Men, each with different characteristics that make each game different, depending on which one you pick. Mr. Impossible, for example, can score points by running through barrels that will just knock Mr. Happy over. In addition, although the obstacles stay in the same place in each game, the other Mr. Men characters move around, so even when you've mastered a particular course, there's plenty of room for surprises. There are two overall difficulty settings (easy and hard) and although each game is essentially the same (use the cursor keys to navigate the course, collect bonuses and special powers and avoid obstacles) the different environments, different Mr. Men and levels of difficulty make this both challenging and rewarding. Even the snakes have smiles on their faces. -Rob Beattie.

Review Barbie Super Sports / Barbie:Winter or summer, rain or shine, players can get a shot of electronic-sports action with Barbie Super Sports, which lets girls try out two sports-snowboarding and in-line skating. Young athletes will enjoy slamming snowmen and setting spinning gates awhirl as they negotiate obstacles, navigate slalom courses and, of course, fly over jumps of varying difficulty. Both sports activities start in the same way: players receive a minimal budget of points for clothes and equipment before they hit the available courses. They rack up more points by making jumps and performing other smooth moves. These points can then be spent on better snowboards or skates, ones capable of performing even more stunts. Aimed at less computer-experienced girls around five-years-old, the courses provide lots of action but comparatively few challenges. Super Sports is fun, but there is nothing here that is especially difficult. Super Sports has a few technical problems-it crashes easily and often, and there are places on the ski hills where it is easy to get hung up if you fall, making it impossible to continue. The courses themselves are too few in number and too narrow in their range of difficulty, making play repetitive. The lack of variety in the courses also means it is easy to get the higher-cost snowboards and skates. [+]
Older girls may find that these factors give the game a low replay factor. On the plus side, two players can skate or board at once, and younger girls will find that the cheerful soundtrack and animations are great additions to the snowboarding and in-line skating experience. -Alyx Dellamonica.

Review Barbie Team Gymnastics / Barbie 3348542137066:Is the fiercely competitive world of female gymnastics ready for the perkiness of Team Barbie? Barbie Team Gymnastics is probably a dream come true for any girl who loves both gymnastics and Barbie. However, don't rely on this game to teach any lessons about sportsmanship: either Team Barbie cheats, or the judges in this program all work for Mattel. Play begins in the lounge, where Barbie and her team-mates, Christie and Teresa, await practice orders. Players must guide the girls through practice routines on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor. Moves are executed by hitting the arrow keys and space bar in a sequence that suddenly appears on the left side of the screen. If a player hits the wrong keys, or doesn't hit the right keys soon enough, their gymnast will bobble or (gasp!) fall off their apparatus, and the coach, Kira, will chirp "Don't give up!" as the program churns relentlessly onward. Maintaining composure after knocking Barbie off the beam is difficult, but just like an actual competition, the good players shake it off and keep going. Young gymnasts will probably enjoy sweating out their mistakes, the realism of the sounds (that hollow thud as hands and feet contact the balance beam) and the 3-D images of gymnasts performing their moves as the "camera" swoops in for different angles. Another nice touch is a replay component that allows players to watch their routines once completed. It's hard to watch the routine as it's being executed, because you must instead keep your eyes on the "Power Bar" that orders the keystrokes for each move. [+]
When players master enough walkovers and handsprings to earn a high score, they're allowed to attend local, sectional, regional and national competitions where prizes are trophies, new moves to add to their repertoire and, of course, new team outfits. Here's where the cheating came in: at a local competition, we ran our Team Barbie members through their paces and scored 9. 2s and 9. 3s, while our competitors consistently scored 9. 5s and 9. 6s. Despite this, come trophy time, Team Barbie got the gold with a score average that was mysteriously boosted to 9. 4! For this blatant disregard for the lessons of loosing and accurate maths, Barbie Team Gymnastics gets an 8. 3 for style, and a 7. 0 for execution. -Anne Erickson, Amazon. com.

Review Bug's Life Action Game / Disney Interactive:As Flik, the goofy inventor ant, you rally new friends, collect seed tokens and stage berry attacks-all while trying to save an ant colony from total destruction by a gang of nasty grasshoppers. Remarkably similar to the film of the same name, A Bug's Life Action Game takes you through an exciting 3-D adventure. An especially fun talent of Flik's is growing plants from the seed tokens he collects. When the plants return, they give him special skills like jumping, flying and invincibility. A favourite was the cannon plant, which actually shoots Flik on to new heights. Creativity is essential in this arcade-style game: to be successful, you must think like an ant and use everything you find to help you keep moving. Even though these ants always think with a group mentality, each insect pal of Flik's has special talents they bring to the company. These circus bugs pretending to be great warriors prove to be indispensable in the ultimate battle against the grasshoppers. With outstanding Disney graphics and realistic 3-D visuals, this game has enough action to delight any arcade game lover. -Jill Lightner.

Review Favourites: S Club 7 / BBC Multimedia:Make every young fan's dream come true as they tour with the band in S Club 7 On the Road CD-ROM with Microphone Headset. Games and activities provide the whole tour experience from joining rehearsals to interviewing the band. They'll love the Microphone Headset that plugs into the PC, fits onto the head like headphones and leaves the singer free to dance and sing their way to stardom. Well, almost. Backing tracks and video clips mean fans can sing along (words are provided on-screen) and join in the band's rehearsal. Want to play journalist? Choose from a selection of questions and then edit your own interview. Design invitations, place cards, door plaques and place mats-all you'll need for an S Club Party at home. Play games such as "Dress for Success" (get Bradley looking good), "Driving Ambition" (manoeuvre your way around a maze, pick up all the band members and get them to the airport on time) and "Hit the Track" (a one or two-player game that tests knowledge of the band's hits by challenging players to identify a sound clip). Packed with high-quality pictures and video clips of all the band members, the interface is highly graphical, although use of Macromedia Flash means it is slow and "clunky" at times. Also, the basic menu system-where you can choose activities and find out about band members-tends to override everything else, so that when you are in the middle of an activity you will still hear the options ("Driving Ambition: get the band to the airport on time", for example). This can get confusing, but careful, deliberate navigation keeps it to a minimum. Any programs that your PC is lacking (QuickTime 5 may be one) are identified and installed with ease and the full-colour instruction booklet included is clear and accurate. The hardest thing of all may be finding the microphone socket for the first time and then trying to convince your 10-year-old S Club 7 nut that you really can't remember where it is the second time. -Lucie Naylor.

Review Tonka Space Station / Hasbro:Construct and operate a functioning space station with an arsenal of out-of-this-world Tonka vehicles. Drive a Tonkonium Extraction Vehicle through a maze of lava pools and explosives, or speed a Terra Racer through the low-gravity zone of the station's sporting arena to entertain your station crew. In Tonka Space Station, you decide whether to build defence grids to demolish hazardous space waste, or focus on food production for your many hungry workers. With the ultimate motor pool at your fingertips, the fate of the station is entirely in your hands. Doing the job well can result in promotion-work your way from a lowly Photon 3rd Class all the way up to Galactic Commander. The game's primary goal is to build a functioning station, one that balances the needs of its residents with other important considerations like safety, productivity and research. To this end, players build modules-sporting arenas, habitats, communication hubs, defence grids and harvest areas-on the platforms available in the station. To build a module, you are given a specialised Tonka vehicle and an arcade-style mission; to construct a harvest module, for example, players drive a Bio-harvester through an obstacle course of hostile alien plant life, snatching edible berries from the jaws-er, pods-of the carnivorous vegetation. Tonka Space Station has some stunning anti-gravity effects, and the machinery and settings of the space-station activities are satisfyingly realistic. The need to stay on top of safety, industrial output and the happiness of the station's people provides an engaging framework for the main focus of the game: the arcade games and the Tonka vehicles these activities employ. [+]
In this sense, Tonka Space Station is slightly disappointing. The variation between the vehicles is not nearly as wide as it could be, and players accustomed to real-world Tonka products may yearn for more options than steering, shooting and avoiding danger. None of the vehicles, in other words, does anything as amazingly cool as what even the simplest front-loader or backhoe can do. If you can get past that, however, this game is perfect for players who are interested in space sciences and enjoy simpler arcade-style activities. (Ages 5 and up) -Alyx Dellamonica.
